A College Roommate Remembered

A number of years ago, I learned that one of my college roommates had died very suddenly of lung cancer. Although I hadn't seen or spoken with her in some time, her death had had a profound effect on me. I wrote my thoughts into a letter to her parents.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Chapman,

I was deeply shocked to hear the news today of Michelle's passing. I have not stopped crying since, and want to take a moment to convey my sympathies and condolences to you and your entire family.

As you know, she and I were roommates our freshman year at the University of Kansas. I'll never forget how she used to make me smile whenever I was feeling homesick. I don't think I ever told her how instrumental she was
to my success during that first year of college. If not for her I might have packed my bags and gone back home.

It's strange how life makes you drift apart from the people you've known and loved. I don't think Michelle and I have spoken for about three
years now, but she has always been in my thoughts.

Michelle was a blessing to you and to everyone who knew her. As for me, I know that I will miss her for the rest of my life.
