Three Things To Avoid When Writing Resignation Letters

#1 - Heavy Heart & Mixed Emotions

Dear Michelle,

It is with a great deal of sadness that I tender my letter of resignation, effective today. My last day of employment with JLP, Inc. will be January 1, 2010. I have accepted an offer of employment with HisCo, Inc. as a VP of Operations, which I'll be starting February 1, 2010.

I leave with a heavy heart and mixed emotions, as I've come to think of you and my co-workers as a wonderful, supportive family, a family that has helped me grow in all aspects of my life; personally, professional and emotionally.

Under your tutelage I have grown to know more about marketing operations than I ever dreamt and will leave well prepared for my new responsibilities.

I also leave with a sense of excitement; a dream of things to come and the promise of tomorrow. Again, without your support and encouragement I might never have gained the knowledge, experience and confidence to pursue my dreams.

During my last two weeks here I will do everything within my control to complete all of my current assignments. Additionally, I am prepared to train anyone you so choose to effect a smooth hand off of my job and responsibilities to someone else.Thank you for all that you have done and I wish you continued happiness and prosperity.

#2 - Leaving To Pursue Dream Job

Dear Rob,

I am writing you to let you know that I am resigning and leaving the employ of Fuggi Firm, effective end of day October 1, 2013. My last day of employment will be October 11, 2013. I have decided to pursue my life dream of being a game warden on a private animal preserve in Kenya and have accepted a position of the same.

As I was writing this letter I was struck by what it really meant and I realized that leaving coworkers that I admire and respect isn't easy to do.  They've been more like family and friends than coworkers...they saw me get married and were all like step parents to my children. I adore each and every last one of them.

And as for you...a person couldn't ask for a better professional or personal mentor.  Your character and work ethic are impeccable and I've been blessed to have had the opportunity to have worked with you and without your support I may not have had the courage to make this radical, yet desirable change.

During my remaining time at the Fuggi Firm I will endeavor to complete all of my current assignments and be sure to leave all my form letters and other templates, so that my replacement can easily find and use them. Thank you for all that your help and support and I wish you and the Fuggi Firm nothing but happiness and prosperity in the future.

#3 - Business Venture Requires My Time

Dear Michael,

It is with sincere apologies that I submit my official letter of resignation today on such short notice. My last day of work will be October 1st, 2013, 2 weeks from today. I am embarking on a business venture of my own in the near future, which requires me to dedicate more time than I would have if I continued to work here. Thank you for being a fair and empathetic employer, and I hope my replacement will perform as well as me if not better. Take care.

With Gratitude and Appreciation,

#4 - Resigning To Go To College

Dear Ms. Smith,

Please accept this letter of resignation effective at a date to be mutually determined but not any later than 3 weeks from today. I am more than willing to work out a notice plus an extra week so that you have the chance to hire and train someone. I will make sure the next person is ready and trained to take my position before I leave the company.

I have decided to go back to school full time to get my degree in electric engineering. Going to college part time is taking much longer than planned and I've decided to face the reality that I don't have enough time to go to school full time, have a full time job, and spend time with my family.

My whole employment at Great Ideas has been a rewarding experience and everyone has been professional and respectful and I have learned skills that I can put to use for the rest of my life.

Thank you for giving me this great venture in my life. Best of wishes in all to come.

Tommie Moore

#5 - Leave With Gratitude

Dear Mrs. Jones:

Please be informed that I am resigning from my position of Community Support Person with Jones Services effective October 15.

It has been a pleasure working for Jones Services over the years and I thank you for all the opportunities to learn I have been offered.  My overall knowledge base has grown in response to the unique training opportunities afforded me at Jones Services, as well as from the valuable on-the-job experiences I have had.

I am leaving to pursue an opportunity as a Coordinator at Mary’s Place with Community Services.  I know that my experience at Jones Services will help me to excel in this new position.  Again, thank you for the many years of wonderful employment.

Please be assured that I will remain available to assist in training any new employees you retain to fill my open position.  I will also do my very best to complete all outstanding projects I currently have as a Community Support Person.

Following are three things that Sample Resignation Letters can help you avoid when resigning from a job:

1. Never resign in anger. I supervised an employee who submitted his letter of resignation because he was stressed by his workload, and he didn't have another job lined up. Wow!

2. Never criticize your employer in your resignation letter. Anything less than taking the high road poisons your chances of future employment with that company, as well as with other companies within the same industry.

3. Never quit without giving proper notice. If a future potential employer finds out about you leaving a former employee without notice during the job interview/screening process you can almost bet on the fact that they'll become suddenly disinterested. Why? Because they'll figure that if you can do it to someone else you might do it to them, too.

A Couple of More Thoughts about Sample Resignation Letters
Resignation letter templates;model the dos and don'ts of what to include in your resignation letters and can have you done with the worrisome task of trying to generate the right letter with just the right tone in minutes.

Here's a final word of advice...take care! Don't burn bridges with a resignation letter that lambastes your employer. Instead, do what most resignation sample letters do; go for the neutral, but professional thank you for the opportunity to have worked for you kind of letter. It'll pay dividends in the long run and just might lead you to your dream job.
