Sympathy on the passing of a friend's mother

My friend's mother passed away after a long battle with leukemia when we were in school. It was a great loss for their family, and while it did not take their pain away, I knew it was the right thing to do to send a condolence letter. This is what I wrote to her.

Dear Angela,

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. I know she had been battling leukemia for a long time and was an inspiration to me and others.

Your mom was a wonderful woman. She was always welcoming to all of us (our classmates) and made us feel comfortable in her home. She loved you all more than anything and placed a great importance on her family.

I will always think fondly of your mother. She was a great woman and made a big impact on me. I know her passing will leave a great void for your family and you will always miss her, but healing will come in time and you can always cherish special memories of her.

You have always been a good friend to me and I wanted to let you know I am here for you. If there is anything I can do, help with household tasks, go out to take your mind off things, or just talk and lend an ear, I am here for you.
